Building the Frank L. Huff School Community takes a commitment and involvement from each family enrolled for the 2010-2011 academic year. Leann and Andi and the entire PTA Executive Board ask you to please consider donating your time and talent to at least one of the events, fundraiser or numerous volunteer opportunities during the year. Yard Duty Helpers: It is important that our children are supervised at lunch time. We need Yard Duty Helpers, i.e. more “eyes, ears, and hands” to watch over our 550 plus students during lunch. Besides helping children open their containers, and remind them of the rules it is a great way to see your own child interacting with classmates (possible paid position).
Morning/Afternoon Traffic Control: It is a parking lot in front of Huff every morning at drop-off and in the afternoon for pick-ups. We need a couple of strong individuals that can remind drivers of the safety rules and to make sure that all of our students are safe (possible paid position).
Huff Auction/Fundraiser (Event date: Oct. 29th): Help with decorations, donations, catering, invitations, set-up, computers and much more. Volunteer the night of the event or join a committee. Laura Norris is our Chairperson. This is the PRIMARY FUNDRAISER for our school!
Newsletter Collators: Every Wednesday morning volunteers staple 575 copies of the Huff N’ Stuff every week for distribution. We hope to have Huff student alumni that come to help collate and staple but we need 2 or more adult volunteers to coordinate the activity between 8:00-9:00am
Office Copy Center Volunteers: The office staff and teachers need help with copies. This is a flexible hourly job that you can do once a month or once a week.
Lost and Found Coordinator: It’s that time of year where students need a sweater in the morning, but by recess it is too hot so the sweater gets removed and left where it lands! We need someone to keep the Lost and Found orderly and occasionally bring the unclaimed items to Goodwill. This is a flexible job that can be done before, during or after school.
Library Helpers: Our Librarian needs help with checking out books, re-shelving books, book repairs before, during and after classes. With enough helpers to monitor students, the library could be open in the morning before school starts and lunchtime (12:10-1pm) so students can READ MORE BOOKS!
Bakers Unite: We are always in need of yummy baked goods for PTA meetings and school events. Join the list of on-call bakers! Great hours and flexibility!
Scholastic Book Fair: Our Chairs this year are Karen Bowers and Susan Marinchak but it takes a committee of volunteers to put this event on. Decorations, working the event, clean-up and a teacher’s lunch are all part of the fun. Besides you get first peek at the new books!
Coffee Barista: Need a few early risers, or a committed individual to set up and clean up the coffee urns for various events such as Principal Coffees, monthly General Huff PTA meetings, etc
Escrip Coordinator: A significant source of funding comes from escrip. We need a coordinator that will attend back-to-school events, PTA meetings and remind parents to sign-up.
Computer Experts: We need few experienced computer experts that will help us in the computer lab with maintenance, software problems and training. This is a great job for Dads who want to come in after hours or weekends.
Audio/Visual Team: We have an AV Coordinator who needs “techie” people that could be available on an as needed basis to set-up/take-down, run, troubleshoot etc. the AV needs at Huff.
Science Night: Once each year in partnership with San Jose Science Museum we have a family science night. We need a Coordinator and 6-8 volunteers the night of the event.
Disaster Preparedness: One or two volunteers that will coordinate disaster drills and emergency kits for our students.
Marquee Maintenance: Once a month the marquees in front and back of the school need to be updated to reflect up-coming events. This is another flexible job easy job for a working parent short on time.
Garden Helpers: Do you love to garden and want to inspire students to learn about plants? We need garden helpers during class hours to help teachers with projects and after hours to get supplies, plant sales etc.
Photographer: Are you good with a camera? Help us photograph school events for historical purposes and displays.
Holiday treats for the Teachers: Around the holidays just before winter break we do something nice for the staff like making a cookie plate. We will need extra bakers and assembly helpers for 1-2 hours, date to be announced.
Staff Appreciation Coordinator: This is a great job for a working parent that needs to do something in the evenings without going to the school. The Staff Appreciation Coordinator will track and send reminders to the appropriate room parent for the Wednesday Staff Appreciation brunches.
Staff Appreciation Luncheon: In the spring, the PTA provides a luncheon for all of the staff to let them know how much we appreciate their support and dedication. Our Coordinator this year is Heidi Ho. She will need help with food, decorations and 6-8 table hosts during the event.
Hawkfest: We need a coordinator for Hawkfest in the spring. What is Hawkfest? Hawkfest is a generously PTA-sponsored, annual event (in late May or early June) designed to bring together the Huff community for three hours of fun, food, games, activities, prizes, and socializing. All games, activities, and prizes are free! Each classroom is responsible to for providing and staffing one booth or activity.
Fitness Day: In partnership with the YMCA Rhythm and Moves the PTA sponsors a fitness day for grades 1st-5th in the spring. We will need 26 volunteers to help out the day of the event.
Cultural Day: We know that Huff is an extremely diverse multicultural school. In 2007, we determined that the students attending Huff at the time were born in 24 different countries! Amazing! The Huff PTA likes to celebrate this diversity by sponsoring at least one annual Cultural Diversity Event but we NEED YOU to make it happen!
5th Grade parent Tea: Each year we send the next class of Huff students onto Middle School and it is a time for students and parents to celebrate their achievements. We need a few parent volunteers to coordinate the tea on the morning of graduation.
Birthday Display Board: We celebrate school wide birthdays on a monthly basis with a display board outside of the office. If you are creative or want to help from home this is a great job for you.
Room Parent: Each classroom will have a Room parent(s) to assist the teacher in class events and special projects. If you are interested in this position in your child’s classroom there will be a form to fill out on back to school night or you can contact your teacher directly.
MVEF Representative: Huff School partners with the Mountain View Educational Foundation to provide funding for enrichment programs and educational materials to enhance the academic curriculum and maintain the high quality of education in the Mountain View-Whisman School District. They host a Monte Carlo Night in March each year to raise funding for the programs. Huff needs a representative that can help ensure Huff the community
Round Table Pizza Night Helpers: We need a Round Table Pizza Night Coordinator this year! If you are interested in helping promote the Huff Pizza night at Round Table on
Grant Road or have other ideas for a Family Dinner Night (first Thursday of every month) by hanging the banner,
promoting it in the school newsletter with creative writing, organizing
the contest, etc. contact the VPVolunteers now.
Classroom Helpers: Our teachers always have
their hands full! Being a
teacher’s helper is a great way to help develop your child’s and classmate’s
learning skills. (Volunteer position requires current immunizations.)
This is only a partial list!! Pick up a copy of this Huff Volunteer Needs list in the office, contact the VP of Volunteers at VPVolunteers@huffpta.com or check this website for more opportunities.
